Staking FAQ
Find answers to commonly asked questions about staking here
What is Staking?
Staking is just about as old as playing poker for money. Staking is simple – a backer (person providing the stake) finds a horse (a player to be staked) and agrees to give the horse a stake (an amount of money to be put into play). The backer and the horse come to an agreement on how the stake will be used and they’ll split the winnings (50/50 is a fairly standard arrangement). The horse plays the game that’s been agreed upon, and that’s the end of that.
What does PTP Staking do?
Part Time Poker Staking (PTP Staking) provides a forum for stakers and players to meet up, and an automated system for tracking stakes that allows players and stakers to learn more about each other and invest accordingly.

What is gear? How do I get it / get rid of it?
Gear is one of the ways you can get a better sense of what type of staker or horse you’re dealing with. Read about How Gear Works.
Is there a charge for staking or being staked?
No. There is a charge for placing a Buy A Piece Ad.
How do I know I won’t get ripped off?
Our system is designed to ensure accountability, and our extensive community gives you a group of players with records and names – the kind of information that helps protect you as a staker. While no system is foolproof, the size of our community and the database of information we have on our members alone should help make you feel more comfortable. Spend some time in the forums, get familiar with the process, and you’ll see how the system works to protect both players and stakers.
I’m interested in staking players, what should I do?
Read our Placing Stakes’ guide for complete info on placing stakes.
I’m interested in getting staked, what should I do?
Read our Applying for Stakes guide for complete info on getting staked. Do not head for the forums and start asking/begging for stakes – that’s the quickest way to ensure that you don’t ever get staked.
You also have the option of purchasing a Buy A Piece ad, which allows you to sell shares of yourself to interested members. More info on BAP ads here.
The player lost the stake, do I get my money back?
Unfortunately, the way stakes typically work is that if and when a stake is lost, the player is not required to pay the stake back. Part Time Poker is in no way responsible for reimbursing stakers who staked a player who has lost. Stakers stake at their own risk.
Someone offered a stake but tells me I have to sign up at a site through his link in order to get it. What do I do?
This is what we call an “affiliate stake.” The staker who is offering a stake like this is essentially spamming his affiliate links to poker sites that he promotes so he can get paid a greater sum or money than the money he is lending out. Only official Part Time Poker advertisers and sponsors are allow to post these on the forums. This is not a place where affiliates can spam others into signing up at their site. While it may be tempting to refuse a stake in this instance, it would be appreciated that if any member sees this type of stake being offered that they Report Abuse on the offender.
