Placing Stakes
How-to: Placing Stakes
Placing a stake is as easy as posting a thread in a forum and choosing a ‘horse’ (slang for the player you back)
Three basic staking steps: Offering, Awarding, and Closing
Step one: Offering the stake.
- Decide on the details of the stake you want to offer – the amount, type of game, etc. Hint: Keep it simple and clean to avoid confusion.
- Start a new thread in the Staking Headquarters of the site you want to stake at.
- First, put the basics of the stake (amount, type of game) in the title (if you want to stake a certain individual, just put private stake and their user name as title)
- Now put all details about who can / can’t apply (some people limit stakes to users with a minimum number of player points, some want to see sharkscope stats, etc), in the body of the post
- Indicate whether or not you’d like a detailed rail thread. The ‘Rail Thread’ will be automatically created for the horse by our system when the stake is awarded. Rail threads are in the Staking Rail forum where the horse is required to posts hand histories, etc, from the stake. Every stake requires at least the Win/Bust hand of each stake played, but as the staker you can require the Horse to post a more detailed rail.
- Finally, enter the stake info. NOTE: This doesn’t go in the body of the post - it is filled in below it. Under the main text box, there’s an options row. Under that is a row labeled ‘Stake amount(s)’fill in amount and the % you’re requesting, click stake back if you require the stake to be refunded before any win is split. Step two: Awarding the stake
- Go to the My Stakes area. The link to the My Stakes area is part of the group of links at the top of the forum under “Stakes.”
- Go to your stake thread and choose the player you want to stake by clicking the “STAKE” button in their application post
- If you have more than one active stake, select the stake you want to assign. Clicking the stake you want to assign should take you back to your stake thread, but now you will see a button on the top right of all replies that says ‘place a stake.’ Click the button of the horse you want to back ( You can only choose a ‘horse’ that has replied to your staking thread.)
- You can view detailed information about each applicant by clicking their profile. See Tools for Stakers.
- PM or IM the winner(s). Chances are they’ll accept the stake before you have a chance to do so,
- Go back to the My Stakes area (you may have to reload the page or click on the ‘My Stakes ‘ link to reload your list of stakes). At the far right of any stake you’ll see a status message. When you’ve successfully assigned a stake, that message will be a link that says ‘Next Step (Confirm Transfer)’
- Click the ‘confirm transfer’ link and you’ll be taken to a page where you’ll get the Poker Account Username of the player you’ve chosen and the total stake amount. Once you have transferred the money on the Poker Site the stake is for, hit Confirm.
- The status message next to that stake should now read “Waiting for player to confirm money transfer.” After your horse confirms the transfer was received, the status message will change to ‘Waiting for player to announce winnings.’
- The stake has now been awarded to your horse. Go watch them play it! It makes the whole thing more fun. Follow along in their rail thread or just log on to the Poker site and search for your horse. Cheer them on from the rail!

Step three: Closing the Stake
- Go to your My Stakes area
- If your horse loses, the status link on your stake should read ‘Confirm Winnings: $0.00.’ Click on that link and then confirm the information on the next screen. The status message next to that stake should now read ‘The Stake has Been Completed.’ It is, and you’re all finished with this stake.
- If your horse reports a win, the status link next to the stake will read ‘Confirm Winnings:’ with the total winnings shown. Click the ‘confirm winnings’ link.
- You’re taken to a summary screen of how much the stake was, how much was won, etc. If it’s all good, click confirm. If some thing is wrong you can report abuse.
- You now have to wait for your horse to confirm that they have transferred you the money. Once they have, you’ll see a new status link next to the stake - ‘Confirm winnings were sent’, which you’ll click once you’ve gotten your payment on the poker site. The status message should now read ‘You have received your share of the winnings’
- The stake will not show as complete in your My Stakes area until the horse confirms payment to PTP Staking for his points.
That’s it – if it seems confusing at all, browse through the forums for examples, or post questions in the PTP Staking Help forum section of our forums before you try one. After one or two stakes, we’re pretty sure you’ll have the whole thing down, and, if you’re like the rest of our members, you’ll move on to more creative stakes that make staking even more fun.
